Todayโ€™s Headlines: Nnamdi Kanu Makes Demand From Prison; Tinubu Asked Me to Claim Adelabu โ€” Makinde

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has reiterated his demand for a referendum on the Biafran question, stating that he would not abandon the pursuit of Biafran sovereignty despite his imprisonment.

Kanu’s position was contained in a message delivered at the 2026 convention of the American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) in the United States. In the message, he maintained that a referendum or the unilateral pursuit of Biafran sovereignty remained the options he was prepared to discuss.

Emphasising his position, Kanu said he would not negotiate what he described as the existence of his people or accept discussions focused on appointments, restructuring or another political conference. He maintained that his demand for a referendum had not changed and that he would not compromise on the issue.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said President Bola Tinubu asked him to take ownership of Adebayo Adelabuโ€™s ministerial appointment after rejecting his recommendation of former Oyo state commissioner for finance, Bimbo Adekanmbi.

Makinde made this disclosure on Sunday during a media chat with Fresh FM in Ibadan, where he also discussed the G5 governorsโ€™ alliance with Tinubu ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

The governor said Tinubu had initially asked him to recommend a development economist for the budget and economic planning portfolio. He said he nominated Adekanmbi because he believed the former commissioner had played a significant role in stabilising the administration of former Oyo State governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Makinde said Tinubu later informed him that he had decided to appoint Adelabu, whom he contested against in the 2019 Oyo governorship election.
