SAMMY GYAMFI FIRES: Afenyo-Markin Has Not Sued Me – Agalga Vows Boot-For-Boot If He Misbehaves

Political tensions surrounding Ghana’s GoldBod controversy have intensified following comments by Gold Board Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi and Majority Leader James Agalga over allegations involving the institution.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, Gyamfi reportedly challenged Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to take legal action against him over his description of the legislator as an extortionist. According to a report by Citinewsroom, Gyamfi said Afenyo-Markin had threatened to sue him but had yet to serve him with any court documents. He maintained that he was prepared to defend his remarks in court if legal proceedings were initiated.

Gyamfi also disclosed that he had contacted Agalga, the MP for Builsa North, asking the Majority Leader to arrange for him to appear before Parliament. He said he was willing to respond to questions concerning claims of a $1.7 billion loss associated with gold transactions.

Agalga, meanwhile, reportedly warned that he would confront Afenyo-Markin directly if the Minority Leader continued making what he considered misleading claims about GoldBod. His comments signalled a readiness to defend the institution against allegations he believes could damage its reputation.

The exchange has generated mixed reactions on social media. Some Ghanaians have called for Parliament to invite Gyamfi to provide explanations and help clarify the disputed figures. Others have criticised the increasingly confrontational language used by political figures, arguing that the controversy should be resolved through evidence and formal parliamentary procedures.

Some NPP supporters have defended Afenyo-Markin and questioned Gyamfi’s accusations, insisting that serious allegations should be substantiated. Meanwhile, NDC supporters have praised Gyamfi’s willingness to face scrutiny and welcomed Agalga’s stated determination to challenge claims against GoldBod.

The dispute continues to draw public attention, with questions about the alleged financial losses and GoldBod’s operations remaining central to the debate. Any conclusions will depend on the evidence presented and the outcome of the relevant accountability processes.
