Orange In Talks To Acquire 70% Stake In Telecel Ghana
French telecommunications giant Orange is reportedly in preliminary discussions to acquire a 70 per cent controlling stake in Telecel Ghana, a move that could expand its direct presence in English-speaking West Africa.
The proposed transaction would see Orange acquire the majority shares currently held by Telecel Group, while the Ghanaian government would retain its existing 30 per cent interest in the telecommunications company.
However, the deal remains at an early stage, with no final sale agreement signed as of October 10, 2026. Negotiations are expected to continue towards the end of the year, although the outcome remains uncertain.
According to Brandspur Brand News, the reported discussions could mark a significant development in Ghana’s telecommunications sector, particularly if they result in a change in the company’s controlling ownership.
The potential acquisition has also attracted attention from industry observers, who see Orange’s reported interest as an opportunity to strengthen its position in West Africa’s competitive mobile communications market.

However, Telecel Group’s chief executive, Moh Damush, has not confirmed that negotiations with Orange are taking place. In comments attributed to him on October 8, he said he had seen media reports about Orange’s interest in the Ghanaian market, adding that interest from external parties would not be surprising given what he described as Telecel’s recent success in Ghana.
The distinction is important because the reported discussions have yet to produce a confirmed transaction. Until an agreement is reached, the ownership structure of Telecel Ghana remains unchanged, with the government retaining its 30 per cent stake.
If completed, the acquisition would give Orange majority control of the Ghanaian telecom business and potentially provide a stronger platform for its operations in the West African market. For consumers and businesses, the implications would depend on how any new ownership translates into network investment, service quality, coverage and competition.
For now, the proposed deal remains subject to ongoing discussions, with further developments expected as negotiations progress.
