NYSC DG Warns Corps Members Against Relying on One Source of Income
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has advised corps members to diversify their sources of income, warning that relying on a single income stream may not be enough to meet their daily needs.
Nafiu gave the advice while addressing members of the 2026 Batch C Stream One at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Anambra State.
According to a post published on the scheme’s official X handle on Monday, the NYSC boss encouraged corps members to use their service year to acquire relevant skills, develop entrepreneurial abilities and explore legitimate opportunities for financial growth.
He urged them to build meaningful relationships, identify business opportunities and adopt investment strategies that could improve their financial stability beyond the mandatory national service year.
“Open your eyes, make friends and leverage comparative advantage. Buy shares for long-term investments,” Nafiu said.
The director-general also encouraged the corps members to embrace diligence and acquire as many skills as possible while they were still young, stressing the importance of preparing for life after their service year.
He further urged them to make meaningful contributions to their host communities and take pride in the teaching profession by imparting knowledge to residents in their places of primary assignment.
Nafiu’s advice highlights the importance of financial planning, entrepreneurship and skills development for young Nigerians navigating an increasingly challenging economic environment.
He encouraged corps members to look beyond their monthly allowances by exploring legitimate opportunities that could help them become financially independent and create wealth over time.
Meanwhile, the NYSC Anambra State Coordinator, Mrs Pauline Ojisua, disclosed that 1,623 corps members had been registered for the ongoing orientation exercise.
In her camp situation report, Ojisua described the corps members as disciplined, cooperative and supportive, noting that they had volunteered to serve on various committees and contributed positively to the smooth running of camp activities.
She also expressed appreciation to the director-general for visiting the camp, describing his presence as a source of encouragement to both corps members and camp officials.
The NYSC orientation programme is designed to prepare graduates for national service by promoting discipline, leadership, entrepreneurship, community development and national integration.
