Mbappe vs Kane: Okocha weighs in on 2026 Ballon d’Or debate

According to a report by Daily Post on Monday October 12, 2026, Super Eagles legend Jay-Jay Okocha has backed Kylian Mbappe to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, explaining why the Real Madrid forward deserves the prestigious individual award ahead of Harry Kane and other contenders.

Okocha described this year’s race as particularly exciting, with several players making strong cases for the award following their performances during the 2025/2026 season.

“The suspense is more exciting than ever,” Okocha said in an interview with French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche.

“There are around half a dozen contenders: Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal, the PSG players,” the former Super Eagles captain added.

However, when asked who deserved to win the award, Okocha singled out Mbappe, pointing to the forward’s reported goalscoring achievements across major competitions.

“I think Mbappe would deserve it for having been the top scorer at the World Cup (10 goals), in the Champions League (15) and in the Spanish league (25),” he said.

Mbappe’s performances in those competitions have strengthened his case, according to Okocha, who believes his ability to deliver on the biggest stages makes him a worthy winner.

Kane, meanwhile, has also enjoyed an impressive campaign with Bayern Munich and remains a strong contender. The England international reportedly recorded 70 goals and nine assists in 64 appearances for club and country, compared with Mbappe’s 53 goals and 10 assists in 59 games.

Despite Kane’s superior overall goal tally, Okocha’s preference for Mbappe reflects the importance he places on performances across major competitions. Kane is also hoping to become the first Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on October 26, when the football world will discover who succeeds the previous winner.
