Maurice Ogeta Reveals Why He May Never Forgive Makau Mutua Over Raila’s 2023 Protests
Maurice Ogeta, the longtime former bodyguard of the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, has opened up about a bitter disagreement with Professor Makau Mutua, accusing him of compromising their safety during the 2023 anti-government protests.
Ogeta made the revelations during an interview on NTV Kenya’s Unmasking Raila’s Shadow, where he recounted an incident involving Mutua’s decision to livestream events from inside Raila’s vehicle during the demonstrations.
The former bodyguard expressed reservations about whether he would ever fully forgive Mutua, suggesting that the incident left him questioning the trust and security arrangements surrounding Raila’s inner circle.
According to Ogeta, Mutua was inside Raila’s vehicle recording and broadcasting events as they unfolded during the politically charged protests.
Ogeta questioned why sensitive activities inside the vehicle were being shared publicly, arguing that the livestream could be watched by both supporters and individuals who might pose a security threat.
He recalled receiving phone calls from contacts in the United States and South Africa who wanted to know what was happening.
Their questions prompted him to establish who was broadcasting from inside the vehicle, eventually discovering that it was Mutua.
The experience, Ogeta suggested, became a significant source of concern, raising questions about the judgment exercised by those who had access to Raila during the demonstrations.
The former bodyguard also revisited his subsequent abduction, which occurred days after the incident involving the livestream.
Ogeta described the ordeal as a “blessing in disguise,” reflecting on the events surrounding the protests and the developments that followed.
He linked that period to the eventual suspension of the demonstrations and Raila’s decision to cancel a planned trip to London.
Ogeta further claimed that Sh14.7 million was stolen from him, alleging that part of the money belonged to the late opposition leader.
Although he recalled these events in the context of his concerns about security and trust, his account did not establish that Mutua was responsible for the abduction or that the livestream directly contributed to it.
The allegations remain Ogeta’s account of events, and the claims about responsibility should not be treated as established facts.
Ogeta’s revelations have renewed attention on the relationships and security concerns surrounding Raila’s inner circle during the 2023 protests.
He suggested that people he trusted may have exposed him, admitting that he remained uncertain whether he had forgiven those he believed had let him down.
The controversy has also brought renewed attention to remarks attributed to Raila’s longtime communications aide, Dennis Onyango, who reportedly criticised Mutua during an appearance on Citizen TV.
The accounts have fuelled speculation about possible disagreements among individuals who worked closely with Raila.
However, further evidence would be needed to establish the circumstances surrounding Ogeta’s abduction and determine whether anyone’s actions compromised his safety.
