Man Utd reach decision on sacking Michael Carrick as Antonio Conte ‘agreement’ claim emerges

According to a report by Football365 on Monday October 12, 2026, Manchester United have decided against sacking Michael Carrick for now, despite the club’s disappointing start to the 2026/27 season and growing speculation linking Antonio Conte with the managerial position.

Carrick guided United to a third-place finish in the Premier League last season after replacing Ruben Amorim, securing Champions League qualification and earning the permanent manager’s job.

However, the Red Devils have struggled to maintain that form this campaign. They have won only one of their opening six Premier League matches and have also been eliminated from the Carabao Cup.

Their recent 1-1 draw against Tottenham, despite their opponents being reduced to ten men, has increased pressure on Carrick to improve results.

Despite the poor start, a report from Football Insider claims United have no immediate plans to dismiss the manager. Former chief scout Mick Brown believes Carrick retains the club’s backing because of his achievements last season.

“From what I’m told, there are no plans in place for him to be sacked as things stand, it’s not something they are currently considering and not something I would expect to see,” Brown told Football Insider.

However, he warned that Carrick must start winning matches soon, as continued disappointing results could intensify calls for his dismissal.

Meanwhile, reports from Italy have claimed that former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte is close to reaching an agreement to replace Carrick at Old Trafford. However, the reported agreement has not been confirmed, and United’s alleged decision to retain Carrick suggests the club is not currently preparing to make an immediate managerial change.

Journalist Graeme Bailey has also reported that United are not placing Carrick under immediate pressure, with the club initially targeting a top-four finish rather than a Premier League title challenge.
