Man City Win 3-0 at Anfield, but a Cloud Hangs Over the Premier League Season
Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield in a game that BBC Sport said felt overshadowed by season uncertainty.
According to BBC Sport, it was City’s first match since being found guilty of 114 charges relating to Premier League financial rules between 2009-10 and 2017-18. City have appealed the verdict.
The same report described a hostile atmosphere, with banners accusing City of cheating and loud jeers when their line-up was read out. City fans answered with a flag backing chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and hundreds of inflatable bananas.
On the pitch, BBC Sport reported that City stayed calm and took control after a quiet first half. Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored in the second half, putting City three points clear at the top.
Head coach Enzo Maresca said the team must “make our own noise by winning games,” adding that he only focuses on what he can control, per BBC Sport.
Per the same report, the win would normally be seen as a title-race statement, but possible sanctions, including relegation or a record points deduction, mean every City result now carries a question mark.
BBC Sport also quoted Wayne Rooney, who recalled his time managing Derby County during a points deduction. He said City could end up “fighting for the title or fighting for relegation.”
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock told BBC Radio 5 Live that the situation needs resolving quickly, but it will take a long time to sort out.
As City left the pitch, the Kop sang “You’re going down.” City fans replied with “We’re not really here.”
Until the appeal is settled, this Premier League season is in limbo, and every win comes with an asterisk.
