Deputy in critical condition after shooting in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Valley News Live) -A Minnehaha County sheriff’s deputy remains in critical condition after being shot during a call in Sioux Falls, authorities said.

Deputies were called on October 9 around 7:00 p.m. to the 2900 block of S. Keyrell Drive.

Officials say deputies arrived just after 7:30 p.m., and about 30 minutes later, shots were fired, hitting both the deputy and the suspect, who has been identified as 39-year-old Brandon John Oetken of Sioux Falls.

According to the Minnehaha County State’s Attorney’s Office, Oetken is charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer with premeditation and three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

Officials say medical aid was given to both the deputy and Oetken at the scene, and both were taken to the hospital, where the deputy remains in critical condition.

The Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation, and the attorney general’s office says it will release a summary of findings within 30 days.
