Baby girl died in late night car crash after serial criminal deliberately drove Audi at 110mph with no headlights

An infant girl was killed in a massive highway pile-up caused by a wanted criminal who was fleeing Georgia police.

Seven-month-old Kalayia Tolbert died in the early hours of Sunday after the car she was riding in got caught in a 10-vehicle pileup on Interstate 20 in DeKalb County, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety (GDPS).

The enormous crash was caused by Cameron Gabriel Kemp, 33, who also died, GDPS said. No other fatalities were reported.

Just before midnight on Saturday, a Georgia State Patrol trooper clocked Kemp driving in an Audi sedan at 110mph in a 60mph zone and weaving through traffic with his headlights off.

The trooper activated his sirens to initiate a traffic stop, and Kemp briefly pulled over before taking off again, GDPS said.

The trooper pursued Kemp down the highway, off an exit and then back onto the highway. Kemp tried exiting the highway again but lost control of his vehicle, struck a guardrail and crashed into multiple cars, causing a chain reaction of collisions.

One car had three infants inside, including Tolbert. They were all rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, but Tolbert died from her injuries.

Kemp was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he also succumbed to his injuries.

Following the crash, investigators determined that Kemp was driving on a suspended driver’s license and had two outstanding warrants for his arrest.

One warrant was for a probation violation and another was for failure to appear in court.

Kemp had also previously served a state prison sentence for aggravated battery, DSP said.

Prison records reviewed by the Daily Mail revealed that Kemp had an extensive criminal history dating back more than a decade. He was most recently released from prison in July 2025.

Kemp served three prison sentences between 2015 and 2025 for charges including theft, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, attempted armed robbery and aggravated assault, among other crimes.

GDPS said that Tolbert’s death ‘is heartbreaking, and our thoughts remain with her family as they face an unimaginable tragedy.’

‘We also recognize the physical and emotional impact this incident has had on the other children, motorists, families, and first responders involved,’ the department added.

GDPS also acknowledged that the fatal crash occurred after a high-speed pursuit involving a state trooper, which can ‘raise serious concerns within the communities we serve.’

But the department said: ‘Our troopers are entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the public, enforcing the law, and addressing dangerous driving behaviors that threaten the safety of others.

‘A motorist traveling at extreme speeds, without headlights on dark roadways, and recklessly maneuvering through traffic presents an immediate danger to everyone sharing the roadway.’

Still, the department emphasized that ‘No traffic violation, attempted arrest, or enforcement action diminishes the tragedy of a child losing her life.

‘Our responsibility now is to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this incident are thoroughly investigated while continuing to support those affected.

‘Above all, we ask the public to keep Kalayia Tolbert’s family, and everyone impacted by this tragedy in their thoughts.’
