WAFU B U17: Wunzalgu named Man of the Match as Ghana edge past Togo

Midfielder Abdul Latif Wunzalgu was named Man of the Match after helping Ghana’s Black Starlets begin their 2026 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship campaign with a 1-0 victory over Togo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The playmaker impressed at the August 4 Sports Stadium on Saturday, providing an influential presence in Ghana’s attacking play as they secured all three points in their opening Group A fixture.

Ghana took the lead in the seventh minute through David Kwarteng, with Wunzalgu playing a central role in the build-up.

A rehearsed free-kick routine involving the midfielder was initially blocked, but captain Abdul Rafiu Issah reacted quickly to attempt a follow-up. The ball then fell to Kwarteng, who completed the move by finding the net and putting Ghana ahead.

Wunzalgu continued to create opportunities as the Black Starlets sought to extend their advantage. His movement and delivery helped Ghana maintain pressure on Togo, who struggled to contain the young Ghanaian side’s attacking threat.

Ghana created several chances to score a second goal but were unable to add to their early lead. They nevertheless managed the remainder of the match effectively to secure a narrow victory.

The result places Ghana at the top of Group A with three points. In the other opening-day match, hosts Burkina Faso and Benin played out a goalless draw.

Wunzalgu’s individual award adds to a positive start for the Black Starlets, who will next face Benin on Tuesday. Ghana will be aiming to build on their winning opening and strengthen their bid to qualify for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
