Somber Mood as University of Eldoret Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Philip Raburu is Laid to Rest

University of Eldoret Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Phillip Tito Okoth Raburu has been laid to rest at his ancestral home in Koyuga Village, Rabuor, Kisumu County.

Prof. Raburu, who served as Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Planning, Research and Extension, died on September 28, 2026, at Eldoret Hospital after a short illness. He was 66 years old. He was laid to rest on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

According to the funeral program, the cortege left Eldoret Hospital Mortuary on Friday, October 9 at 7am for a requiem service at ACK St. Matthew’s Cathedral, Eldoret, before proceeding to Kisumu.

A candle-lighting ceremony was held on October 7 at the University of Eldoret School of Business Complex in his honour.

The main funeral service was held at Migingo Primary School from 8am on Saturday, followed by burial at his family home.

Born on December 1, 1959, Prof. Raburu studied at Maranda and Maseno Schools, earned a bachelor’s degree in botany and zoology from Kenyatta University in 1986, a master’s in hydrobiology from University of Nairobi, and a doctorate in environmental studies from Moi University.

He was a renowned hydrobiologist who developed tools for assessing river health using aquatic invertebrates, including the Kenya Invertebrate Scoring System.

He mentored generations of water scientists.

He is survived by his wife Dr. Elizabeth Awuor Raburu of University of Eldoret, children Jessica, Eugene, Steve and JoyFaith, and five grandchildren. He was also uncle to media personality Willis Raburu.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii mourned him as a distinguished scholar and administrator.
