Government plans movement restrictions on Sohail Afridi

The federal government is deliberating on its future course of action regarding statements made by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, with consultations underway on possible legal and administrative measures, sources said.

According to the sources, the government has decided to restrict Afridi’s movements, although the scope and implementation of the reported restrictions were not immediately clear.

The consultations are also focused on the province’s security situation and law and order, with the federal government reiterating that it would not tolerate any obstruction to counterterrorism measures, the sources added.

Security arrangements have reportedly been strengthened at key locations in Peshawar, while surveillance of sensitive areas has been increased.

Security agencies have also been directed to remain vigilant in view of the prevailing law and order situation, according to sources.

The reported steps come amid growing concerns over terrorist attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and ongoing discussions at the federal level about the province’s security and administration.

Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari signed a summary for imposing a state of emergency and Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following approval by the federal cabinet.

The proposed measures were aimed at addressing the deteriorating security situation and rising terrorist attacks in the province, according to the information provided.

The proposal invokes Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, which deal with emergency provisions and the exercise of certain functions of provincial governments under specified constitutional circumstances.

The Presidency’s statement cited an escalation in terrorist activity, including attacks on government installations, infrastructure and law enforcement agencies, as reasons for the proposed measures.
