Shots Were Fired into the Air to Distract a Tiger After It Attacked a Man Who Had Entered Its Enclosure. Police Say the Tiger Was Unharmed and Remained Inside the Enclosure

At 1:35 p.m., South Yorkshire Police were called “to reports of a man entering a tiger enclosure. The tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury.” He hasn’t been named and was pronounced dead at the scene.

By evening police were pushing back on rumours the animal had been put down. “The animal was uninjured and remained in the enclosure following the incident and there is no wider risk to the public,” they said.

A park insider told regional papers that keepers fired shots into the air to pull the tiger away, not to hit it. “The animal wasn’t shot and is absolutely fine and not injured. The barriers are huge. You would have to really want to get inside.” The park’s emergency procedures were activated, the site was evacuated, and it stayed closed Sunday.

The enclosure, Land of the Tigers, is a 2-acre reserve that opened in 2011, with a 150-metre raised walkway for visitors. Two Amur tigers live there: Tschuna, a female who arrived in 2013 and had three cubs in 2015, and Altai, a male born at Norway’s Dyreparken who arrived in 2025. The other photo in our caption shows Tschuna with one of her cubs in 2015. The park hasn’t said which tiger was involved in the attack. The decision to keep the tiger isn’t a given in cases like this. In San Francisco in 2007, police shot and killed the tigress Tatiana.

In Delhi in 2014, officials chose to keep a white tiger that killed a man in its enclosure. “Why remove him? He is not a man-eater.”
