Salawa Abeni to celebrate her golden jubilee in Waka music
Veteran Waka musician, Queen Salawa Abeni, is set to mark five decades on stage with a concert scheduled for October 18 at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island.
The event, entitled āQueen Salawa Abeni ā Five Decades of Waka,ā will bring together music lovers, colleagues, family members and admirers of the star to celebrate her contributions to Nigeriaās entertainment industry.
The concert is expected to feature live performances, tributes and a showcase of the songs that have defined her five-decade career. It will also spotlight the enduring appeal of Waka music and its place in Nigeriaās cultural heritage.
Abeni began her professional career in 1976 with the release of an album dedicated to the late Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed. The album introduced a gifted young singer and marked the beginning of a career that would span decades.
Over the years, she became known for her powerful vocals, stage performances and ability to connect with audiences. Her contributions to Waka music received royal recognition in 1992 when the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, conferred on her the title of Queen of Waka Music.

The golden jubilee concert will honour Abeniās longevity, influence and commitment to the traditional Yoruba musical genre. It will also give audiences an opportunity to experience the music that established her as one of Nigeriaās most recognisable cultural performers.
Five decades after her professional debut, Abeni remains an important figure in Nigerian music. Her October 18 concert is expected to serve as both a celebration of her career and a tribute to the enduring legacy of Waka music.
