Punjab district courts decide 86pc pending arms cases

LAHORE  –  District courts across Punjab decided 2,934 out of 3,397 cases pending under the Pakistan Arms Ordinance, 1965, up to 2023, during the past six months, achieving a disposal rate of over 86 percent. According to the Lahore High Court media cell on Saturday, the progress has been made on the special directives of Chief Justice Lahore High Court Justice Aalia Neelum to ensure the timely provision of quality justice to litigants. All cases registered under the ordinance up to 2023 have been decided in 17 districts of Punjab, while 463 cases remain pending in other districts. A large number of these cases are linked to pending murder trials. The chief justice has issued further directions for the early conclusion of murder trials linked to the pending arms cases to facilitate the speedy disposal of the remaining cases. The achievement has been attributed to judicial reforms, an effective case management system, active monitoring and a transparent strategy.

The digitalisation of the judicial system is also helping reduce the backlog of cases and strengthen the confidence of lawyers and litigants in the justice system.
