Paul Merson says £115m Chelsea midfielder ‘best in the world’ after Bournemouth win

According to a report by Football365 on Saturday October 10, 2026, former Arsenal star and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has described Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo as the best holding midfielder in the world following the Blues’ emphatic 5-1 victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Chelsea delivered an impressive performance at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Jordan Henderson and Joao Pedro both scoring twice, while Morgan Rogers also found the net.

Caicedo started alongside Henderson in defensive midfield under manager Xabi Alonso, helping provide protection for the Chelsea defence and stability in the middle of the pitch.

The Ecuador international, who joined Chelsea from Brighton in the summer of 2023 for a reported £115 million, impressed Merson with his performance. The 24-year-old recorded four tackles and covered 8.71 kilometres during the match.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Merson praised the partnership between Caicedo and Henderson, highlighting the different qualities they bring to the team.

“I thought they worked well together, Caicedo and Henderson,” Merson said.

He added: “Henderson has got the experience, and Caicedo, for me, is the best holding midfield player in the world of football.”

When Rodri was suggested as another candidate for the position, Merson explained that the two midfielders offer different qualities. He believes Rodri is better suited to controlling possession and dictating the tempo, while Caicedo excels at winning the ball back and breaking up opposition attacks.

Chelsea manager Alonso was also pleased with Caicedo’s contribution, admitting that the midfielder’s presence makes the team stronger in the middle of the pitch.

Alonso explained that the original plan was not for Caicedo to play the entire match, but he was satisfied with how the Ecuadorian performed. The manager also praised the understanding between Caicedo and Henderson, noting that their positioning and complementary qualities provide balance and stability.

The Chelsea boss believes the pair can help create a strong foundation for the rest of the team, allowing the attacking players to operate with greater freedom.

Caicedo’s display against Bournemouth will therefore be encouraging for Alonso as he looks to build a competitive Chelsea side capable of challenging for major honours.
