Tinubu Admits Petrol Subsidy Removal Caused Hardship, Expands Affordable Transport
According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, October 11, 2026, President Bola Tinubu has admitted that the removal of petrol subsidies has increased financial pressure on many Nigerian households, noting that his administration is working to provide affordable transportation options to ease the burden on citizens.
The President explained that the decision to end the subsidy came with the responsibility to introduce practical measures to reduce transportation expenses, particularly for Nigerians who continue to face difficulties accessing affordable transport services.
Tinubu disclosed this in a statement published on his verified X handle on Sunday, where he highlighted ongoing efforts to deploy buses, electric vehicles and compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered transportation systems across various states.
According to the President, the Federal Government is collaborating with state governments and private investors to expand access to affordable transportation through the National Affordable CNG Transportation Programme.
He added that the initiative was being implemented in partnership with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to ensure that more Nigerians benefit from cheaper and more accessible transportation services.
The programme is part of the government’s efforts to reduce the effects of rising transportation costs following the removal of the petrol subsidy.
Tinubu disclosed that several states had already received buses under the initiative, with additional vehicles prepared for deployment to improve public transportation.
He stated that Ekiti State had received 15 buses in recent weeks, while Lagos State had received 20 buses. Akwa Ibom State, according to the President, has also prepared 50 buses for service.
The administration hopes that increasing the availability of buses and introducing alternative energy-powered vehicles will help lower transportation expenses for commuters.
The initiative also seeks to encourage the adoption of CNG and electric vehicles as alternatives to petrol-powered transportation, potentially reducing dependence on conventional fuel.
Tinubu’s remarks come amid continued concerns over the cost of living and the impact of rising transport fares on households and businesses across the country.
