Monique Muller Opens Up About Sharing a Pollsmoor Cell With 90 Women

Monique Muller, the former partner of television personality Katlego Maboe, has spoken publicly about her nearly three-week stay at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in October 2025. She described difficult living conditions, overcrowding and limited access to basic services during her detention.

Muller was arrested after accepting a lift home following a night out. Metro police stopped the vehicle and found a firearm under the driver’s seat. All six people in the car were taken into custody. She insisted the gun did not belong to her. The charges against her were later withdrawn.

Speaking to Sunday World, Muller said about 90 women shared one cell that had only a single toilet and a broken shower. Detainees were allowed outside for just 15 minutes on two occasions during her time there. She also struggled to make phone calls.

She recounted several upsetting incidents. One woman allegedly gave birth inside the cell. Another inmate had a finger bitten off. A detainee was badly assaulted while warders did not step in straight away. Muller claimed an injured person waited three days for medical help. When she complained about the conditions, she said warders threatened to punish her.

The Department of Correctional Services has strongly rejected these claims. Officials described them as “completely fallacious” and insisted that proper healthcare, safety measures and oversight remain in place at the facility.

Muller and Maboe share a young son. She said some of the reports about her arrest have been used against her in their ongoing custody dispute. The couple first made headlines in 2020 over public claims of infidelity and domestic issues. Maboe denied the allegations, and a Cape Town court cleared him of misconduct in 2022.

The specific events Muller described have not been independently confirmed. Her account has drawn attention to the daily realities faced by many women held at Pollsmoor.
