Man City Thrash Liverpool 3-0 To Extend Premier League Lead After Guilty Verdict

According to Channels television, Manchester City defeated 10-man Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday to maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season, extending their lead at the top of the table following a verdict that found the club guilty of breaching financial regulations.

City secured victory through second-half goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki, taking their league winning streak to six matches and restoring their three-point advantage at the summit.

The victory came amid growing scrutiny of the club after an independent commission found that City and their Emirati owners had arranged deals described as “sham” transactions to inflate revenues and reduce costs by more than £900 million between 2009 and 2018.

The club is appealing the verdict, with potential sanctions, including a points deduction or expulsion from the Premier League, still under consideration.

The case has also raised questions about whether City could face retrospective action over titles won during the period under investigation.

Ahead of Sunday’s match, Liverpool supporters made their feelings known, with fans lining the streets to welcome the visitors with chants of “cheats” and “going down.”

A banner displayed at the famous Kop end read, “a generation of supporters cheated.”

Despite the hostile atmosphere, City delivered a commanding performance against a Liverpool side that struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.

Liverpool’s hopes were further damaged when Ryan Gravenberch was sent off shortly before City’s opening goal, leaving the hosts with 10 men.

The home side had briefly threatened after the interval, with Lewis Koumas denied a goal on his first Premier League start by City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

However, City’s attacking quality proved decisive after Jeremy Doku was introduced from the bench.

The Belgian winger was brought down by Gravenberch, who received a second booking for the challenge, and Liverpool struggled to recover from the dismissal.

City broke the deadlock around 25 minutes from time when Doku’s deflected effort fell for Haaland, who finished to give the visitors the lead.

Doku doubled the advantage just three minutes later with a superb curling strike into the top corner, leaving Liverpool facing an increasingly difficult task.

Cherki completed the scoring after exchanging a neat one-two with Josko Gvardiol before calmly slotting the ball past Alisson Becker.

The defeat was Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola’s first since taking charge of the club. His options had already been weakened by the absence of injured players Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo.

Liverpool have finished behind City three times in the past 12 years, intensifying the rivalry between the two clubs during a period of sustained competition for English football’s biggest honours.

City’s rise followed their 2008 takeover backed by Abu Dhabi investment, which transformed the club into one of the dominant forces in English football.

Sunday’s result strengthened their position in the title race, although the ongoing financial case continues to cast uncertainty over their achievements and future in the competition.
