“He Wants to Bring Buffaloes” Gachagua Reveals How Ruto’s Plan Could Put Kenyans’ Lives at Risk

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticised President William Ruto over a reported plan to address Kenya’s milk shortage, questioning the suitability of importing buffaloes from India instead of dairy cows.

Gachagua raised concerns about the proposal, suggesting that the reported plan could expose Kenyans to risks if the animals were intended to help increase the country’s milk production. His remarks focused on the difference between buffaloes and conventional dairy cattle used by farmers to produce milk.

“So, because there’s a milk shortage in Kenya, Ruto wants to bring buffaloes from India. Instead of bringing cows, he wants to bring buffaloes. How can you milk a buffalo? Won’t that kill people?” Gachagua said.

The former Deputy President used the remarks to challenge the government’s approach to addressing milk supply concerns. He questioned why the administration would consider buffaloes when dairy cows are commonly kept by Kenyan farmers for commercial milk production.

Kenya’s dairy sector supports millions of livelihoods through milk production, processing, transportation and retail. Any proposal to introduce animals from abroad for agricultural purposes would require clear information about the breeds involved, their suitability for local conditions, animal health requirements and their expected contribution to milk production.

Gachagua’s comments have brought attention to questions surrounding the reported importation plan and its intended purpose. However, his remarks alone do not establish that the proposed imports would endanger consumers, and further details would be needed to assess the plan’s actual implications.

The debate comes amid continuing discussions about how the government can strengthen local agricultural production and ensure a reliable supply of milk. The key issue is whether the proposed measure is supported by a clear technical and economic justification that addresses farmers’ needs and protects public health.
