FIA arrests two women in Laiba case as visa fraud probe uncovers Rs9.3m scam

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered a case against two suspects in connection with the case of Islamabad student Laiba Aijaz and arrested two women said to be associates of a suspect, Nauman.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, investigators say the case has revealed an alleged fraud in which Rs9.3 million was taken from the student on the promise of a US visa and scholarship.

According to the FIA, Rs2.9 million was transferred from Laiba’s bank account, while the remaining amount was allegedly collected in cash. The suspects are accused of deceiving her with fake scholarship letters, university offer letters and fee receipts.

The agency said it would also determine the role of other people who may have been involved in the case.

Police sources said Nauman had allegedly gone into hiding in a rented room. Evidence of online fraud and the blackmail of women was reportedly found on his mobile phone. Investigators believe the suspects had formed a group to carry out such activities.

According to the police sources, Nauman had worked in the anti-corruption department in Quetta and had also been employed by a company in Islamabad.

The case follows the discovery of Laiba’s body near a flat in Islamabad on Friday. Laiba, the daughter of Muhammad Aijaz, lived in flat number 8 at Gulistan Plaza in G-10.

The 22-year-old student, who studied at the International Islamic University Islamabad, was found in a greenbelt near an old traffic police checkpost within the limits of Ramna police station.

Police initially said the circumstances appeared to indicate suicide. Police sources also said she had paid money to an agent for help obtaining a study visa but had allegedly been defrauded. Investigations were under way.

The 24NewsHD TV channel has also obtained CCTV footage recorded before Laiba’s alleged suicide. The footage has emerged as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding her death and the alleged fraud.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the family of Laiba Aijaz, a student of the International Islamic University Islamabad, who died by suicide after falling victim to a visa and education-related financial scam. Naqvi, accompanied by Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, met Laiba’s father and other family members at their residence in Islamabad’s G-10 sector. He offered condolences and assured the family that those responsible for the tragedy would be brought to justice. The interior minister said an FIR had been registered and police were investigating all aspects of the case. He pledged that those found responsible would face strict legal action.

Laiba’s father expressed confidence in Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and praised the minister and his team for their work and efforts.

He also urged parents to check the credentials of anyone offering to send their children abroad for education. He warned families not to trust education agents without carrying out proper checks.
