CJP Leaders Placed Under Preventive Arrest in Delhi, to Appear Before Executive Magistrate
Delhi Police have placed Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka under preventive arrest, with the three scheduled to appear before an Executive Magistrate on Sunday, according to the party’s legal affairs head, Ratna Singh.
Singh said the leaders would be produced before the Executive Magistrate at Delhi Cantt Police Station at 9 a.m. on Sunday. In a post on X, she said a Delhi Police official had informed her about the proceedings earlier in the morning and that she would be present at the police station along with other lawyers representing the party.
The three leaders were detained on Saturday at Indira Gandhi International Airport after arriving in the national capital to participate in a protest against the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Their detention came ahead of the CJP’s planned demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Meanwhile, Singh denied reports circulating on social media that the CJP had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking the release of its leaders and other members allegedly detained ahead of the proposed protest at Jantar Mantar.
Clarifying the party’s position, Singh said the petition being shared online had not been filed by the CJP and that the party was not approaching the Supreme Court over the alleged detentions.
“Pls note – This petition is not filed by @Cockroachisback. We are not approaching the Supreme Court, and no habeas corpus petition has been approved by the CJP’s legal team,” Singh said in a post on X.
She also tagged a petition circulated by a legal news platform, reiterating that it had not been filed by the party.
The document cited Article 32 of the Constitution and sought a writ, including habeas corpus, directing authorities to produce before the Supreme Court all persons allegedly detained in connection with the CJP’s proposed October 10 demonstration at Jantar Mantar and to release those whose detention was not authorised by law.
Separately, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde announced that protesters would march towards Jantar Mantar again on Sunday, stating that the agitation would continue until CEC Gyanesh Kumar resigned.
