Federal govt deploys army in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under Article 245 after emergency decision
ISLAMABAD : The federal government has issued a notification for the deployment of the Pakistan Army in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under Article 245 of the Constitution, tasking troops with assisting the civil administration and protecting citizens and public installations following the imposition of an emergency in the province.
According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Interior, the army will perform security duties and support civilian authorities in maintaining law and order and safeguarding public and government property.
The deployment will remain in place for the duration of the emergency, which took effect on October 11, 2026, the notification stated.
The strength of the troops to be deployed will be determined by the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in consultation with General Headquarters (GHQ), according to the order.
Matters relating to troop numbers and deployment arrangements will be finalised in coordination with the Military Operations Directorate to ensure that adequate personnel are available to support the civil administration and meet security requirements.
The Interior Ministry said the notification would be published in the Gazette of Pakistan, Part II.
The move follows the federal government’s decision to impose an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid concerns over the law and order situation. The army’s deployment is intended to provide security support to civilian authorities and protect citizens and government installations during the emergency period.
