BAT Drives Bulletproof Car;He Has 5 Helicopters And Can Fly To Places Instead Of Using 150 Cars—Sowore
Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has promised to reduce the cost of governance in Nigeria by limiting his presidential convoy to a maximum of three vehicles if elected president.
Speaking in an interview with Symfoni TV, Sowore criticised the size of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s convoy, claiming that the president travels with more than 150 vehicles despite being transported in a bulletproof car designed to provide security.
The AAC candidate argued that maintaining such a large convoy was unnecessary and contributed to traffic congestion, inconveniencing other road users. He maintained that a president should adopt a more efficient transportation arrangement that would reduce public inconvenience and the expenses associated with official movements.
Sowore also claimed that Tinubu had access to five helicopters, although he alleged that only two were still operational. He argued that using helicopters for some official journeys could reduce the need for an extensive motorcade, particularly when travelling between distant locations.
Explaining his position, Sowore recalled how security arrangements for Nigerian presidents evolved following the assassination of former Head of State General Murtala Mohammed. He argued that modern protective vehicles had made it difficult for attackers to target a president travelling in a secure convoy.
He stated, “After Murtala was killed they started driving around in bulletproof cars. Now the president of Nigeria is driving around in ballistic vehicles, so there is no way anybody is going to kill a president of Nigeria just like that in a convoy. The president of Nigeria has over 5 helicopters, I know two of them are still working so you can always fly from one end to the other in a helicopter. So why are you causing traffic with over 150 cars in a convoy”.
Sowore’s proposal forms part of his broader criticism of government spending and the resources allocated to public officials. By pledging to restrict his convoy to three vehicles, he suggested that a smaller presidential motorcade could serve as an example of reducing unnecessary expenditure while maintaining essential security arrangements.
However, the implementation of such a proposal would require consideration of presidential security requirements, operational logistics and the responsibilities of other officials who may accompany the president during official engagements.
