Georgia faced a third-and-2 situation on its own side of the field with around two minutes of the game left when Lee gave up a penalty that helped the Bulldogs move closer to closing out the game. And DeBoer made his displeasure unmistakable when Lee returned to the sideline as the Alabama coach appeared to tell the defensive back that he had “just cost us the damn game.”Underlining the frustration surrounding a contest that had remained within reach deep into the fourth quarter, the exchange came after Alabama had already endured another pivotal sequence that threatened its chances of forcing overtime.Alabama failed to capitalize on the opportunity and on their final drive, quarterback Keelon Russell was sacked, pushing the offense out of field goal range and going on to lose the game by never having another chance to score.

The result handed Alabama its first loss of the season and moved Georgia to 6-0 as the Bulldogs also demonstrated their ability to handle a difficult road environment, surviving a late challenge to maintain their perfect record.Georgia’s quarterback Gunner Stockton delivered an efficient performance, completing 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards, one touchdown and one interception whilst Russell, meanwhile, completed 16 of 20 attempts for 185 yards and a touchdown. He did enough to keep them in the game but Alabama could not find the decisive late score needed to turn its performance into a victory and the defeat ended a promising opening stretch for the Crimson Tide, who had beaten East Carolina, Kentucky, Florida State, South Carolina and Mississippi State during their first five games. The Georgia matchup represented their toughest examination so far, and the narrow margin offered some encouragement despite the disappointing finish and Alabama’s position in the national rankings will now become a major talking point.Georgia is expected to benefit from the Texas Longhorns’ loss to the Oklahoma Sooners and could move to the top of the AP Top 25 when the rankings are released Sunday whilst the Crimson Tide, meanwhile, could fall into the No. 8-10 range. The defeat may ultimately be viewed as a relatively respectable loss when postseason contenders are assessed as losing to a highly ranked Georgia team is unlikely to damage Alabama’s College Football Playoff prospects.Alabama’s next opportunity comes against the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday, October 17, with kickoff scheduled for 20:30 ET/17:30 PT on ABC.
