£50m Arsenal Star Risks Losing Starting Place After Leeds Performance

According to a report by Football London on Sunday October 11, 2026, Arsenal secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium, recovering from an early second-half setback to move level on points with the Premier League leaders temporarily.

James Justin put Leeds ahead in the 55th minute, threatening another frustrating afternoon for Mikel Arteta’s team. However, Riccardo Calafiori and substitute Bruno Guimaraes scored to complete Arsenal’s comeback and secure three valuable points.

The victory represented an important response after Arsenal’s defeat against Brighton before the international break. Despite several injury concerns, Arteta fielded a competitive starting eleven, including Ezri Konsa, Declan Rice and Kai Havertz.

However, Viktor Gyokeres, Jurrien Timber and Eberechi Eze were among those initially left out. Arsenal struggled to create clear opportunities despite dominating possession, making their substitutes’ contributions particularly important in securing the comeback.

While Havertz remains Arteta’s preferred attacking option despite an inconsistent display, Ben White faces increasing competition for his position. His performance against Leeds could give returning defender Timber an opportunity to reclaim the right-back position.

White struggled particularly during the opening half, repeatedly surrendering possession against Leeds’ pressing approach. According to SofaScore, the Arsenal defender lost the ball 11 times before halftime, more than any other player involved.

Although White improved after the interval, he continued experiencing difficulties before being substituted in the 62nd minute. He completed just one of six attempted long passes, registered no successful crosses and won only one of three tackles.

The former England international also found himself offside twice. Nevertheless, he contributed an important moment by assisting Calafiori’s equaliser, heading the ball across goal for the Italian defender to finish from close range.

Despite that contribution, White’s overall performance raised questions about whether he should retain his starting position for Arsenal’s upcoming fixtures. Timber’s return to action has strengthened Arteta’s options and increased competition at right-back.

Timber previously established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice right-back before suffering a hamstring injury towards the end of last season. His recovery was lengthy enough to rule him out of the World Cup.

Introduced against Leeds, the Netherlands international impressed defensively and helped Arsenal maintain possession. Leeds struggled to create attacking opportunities down his side, suggesting Timber could immediately strengthen the team.

Arsenal face Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday before travelling to Nottingham Forest next Sunday. If Timber is fully fit, White could find himself relegated to the substitutes’ bench as Arteta considers restoring his preferred defender to the starting lineup.
