“We Have Prepared Our Presidential Campaign Council, But Obi And Kwankwaso Must Be Consulted–Cleopas

The National Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe, has explained why the party has yet to complete the appointment of officials into its presidential campaign council, saying Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso must be involved in decisions concerning the leadership of the campaign.

During a press conference following a two-day meeting of the party’s National Working Committee shared by SYMFONI, Cleopas addressed questions about preparations for the 2027 general election.

He explained that the party had already developed a structure for its presidential campaign council but was awaiting further consultations with its presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

Speaking about the arrangements, Cleopas said, “We have prepared the structure of our presidential campaign council, but Peter Obi and Kwankwaso must be consulted before the key appointments are made.”

The NDC chairman explained that the National Working Committee was responsible for managing the affairs of the party, including organising the presidential campaign council.

However, he maintained that the committee could not make certain appointments without taking into consideration the preferences of the candidates who would lead the campaign.

According to him, the party had already prepared an organisational structure outlining the positions required for the campaign.

He said the document had been submitted to the party’s leaders, who were expected to examine the arrangements and make recommendations concerning the individuals who should occupy important positions.

Cleopas explained that the involvement of Obi and Kwankwaso was particularly important because both candidates represented different parts of the country.

He maintained that their political experiences and knowledge of their respective regions would be useful in developing a campaign structure that reflected the party’s national interests.

The former senator also stated that the party regularly consulted its national leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside Obi and Kwankwaso.

He explained that these consultations were intended to provide guidance to members of the National Working Committee rather than suggest that the committee was incapable of carrying out its responsibilities.

He further argued that selecting campaign officials without proper consultation could create difficulties during the election period.

Cleopas expressed concern about appointing individuals who might subsequently demonstrate divided political loyalties, saying the party needed to examine the backgrounds and commitments of those being considered.

The NDC chairman maintained that the delay in announcing the campaign council should not be interpreted as a disagreement within the party.

He explained that the leadership was working together to complete the arrangements and ensure that the individuals appointed would understand the responsibilities entrusted to them.

Cleopas noted that the party was approaching the preparations carefully because of the importance it attached to the approaching election.

He maintained that consultations with Obi, Kwankwaso and other party leaders would continue until the necessary appointments were agreed upon and the campaign council was ready for inauguration.
