Trenton police explain city restrictions on posting yard sale signs
The Trenton Police Department is reminding residents that city ordinances prohibit placing signs advertising yard sales, garage sales, or rummage sales on traffic signs, utility poles, and other structures within public rights-of-way.
The department recently shared information on its Facebook page outlining provisions of the Trenton city code regulating the distribution and placement of handbills and commercial flyers.
Under the ordinance, handbills and flyers may not be placed on or attached to signs, utility poles, transit shelters, or other structures located within a public right-of-way. Police officers have the authority to remove any handbills or flyers found in those areas.
The restrictions also extend to private property. City code prohibits leaving or attaching handbills and flyers on privately owned property displaying a “no solicitor” sign.
Individuals observed distributing handbills or flyers are required to identify themselves to police by presenting a permit or another form of identification. The ordinance establishes this requirement to help authorities determine who may be responsible if the city receives a complaint alleging property damage during the distribution of advertising materials.
The reminder emphasizes existing municipal restrictions governing the placement of advertising materials on public structures and designated private property throughout Trenton.
