Today’s Headlines: Avoid return to fuel subsidy era,” Ogunyemi warns, Nigeria will turn around for better’ – Obasanjo

Public affairs analyst, lawyer, and economic historian, Prof. Tunji Ogunyemi, has warned the Federal Government against reinstating universal petrol subsidies, describing any such move as a retreat into systemic waste and corruption.

Speaking with our correspondent yesterday, Prof. Ogunyemi posited that providing temporary fuel relief to Nigerians is a welcome measure, provided the system is safeguarded against manipulation and smuggling to neighboring countries.

He stressed that short-term relief measures cannot completely resolve the nation’s economic challenges, describing them as temporary interventions to cushion the impact of global supply disruptions.

“Fuel relief is neither a final nor a complete solution. No government in the world can proffer, or even pretend to offer, a total solution to complex economic problems.

The wife of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, Mrs Bola Obasanjo, has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, saying the country will experience a positive turnaround.

She spoke on Saturday in Abeokuta while receiving a delegation of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ogun State Chapter, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.

According to her, Nigeria is blessed and will experience better days ahead.

“Nigeria is a land flowing with milk and honey, and things will turn around for the better for us,” she said.

The presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has said he plans to reset Nigeria through a government that would last just four years.

Makinde, the current governor of Oyo State, said in Yola on Saturday that he would serve as president for only four years, after which he expected presidential power to return to the North.

He spoke at a North-East town hall meeting organised by the party in Yola, attended by APM leaders and candidates from the six states of the North-East. He stressed that his administration would transfer power to the North after four years.

I want to assure you that the government we will put in place from May 2027 will be a transitional government of national unity,” Makinde declared, stressing, “It will not last beyond four years.”

The National Democratic Party (NDP) governorship candidate in Kebbi, Alhaji Ahmadu Zumaru, has vowed to overhaul education and tackle insecurity in the state.

Zumaru made the pledge in Birnin Kebbi at a Candidates Engagement Forum organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kebbi Council, to enable governorship candidates present their programmes and policy proposals to the electorate.

He said his ambition was driven by the need to provide people-oriented leadership and tackle corruption and other challenges facing the state.

” We cannot leave children at home indefinitely while waiting for security to improve. We must make provisions for them to continue learning,” he said.
