Sifuna Beats Gachagua, Kalonzo in Early Results of New Poll, See Positions of Matiang’i & Others

A new online opinion poll has placed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at the top of the list of opposition leaders preferred to challenge President William Ruto in Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

The survey, conducted by Kenyans.co.ke, sought to establish which opposition figure respondents would like to see contest against Ruto in the next presidential election. The preliminary results show Sifuna enjoying a significant lead over several prominent political figures associated with the opposition.

According to the figures available when the poll screenshot was taken, Sifuna had secured 90 per cent of the votes, placing him well ahead of the other candidates featured in the survey.

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka occupied second place with 4 per cent, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i each received 3 per cent of the votes.

At the time the results were shared, the poll had attracted 20,580 votes, with fewer than three hours remaining before the voting period closed.

Sifuna’s strong performance comes amid growing political discussions about the direction of Kenya’s opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. Opposition leaders are expected to navigate questions surrounding leadership, unity, candidate selection and the strategy required to mount a serious challenge against the incumbent president.

The senator’s lead in the survey has drawn attention to his growing visibility in national political debates and the possibility of his name featuring prominently in discussions about the opposition’s future leadership.

However, the results should be interpreted cautiously. The survey was conducted online and does not necessarily represent the views of the wider Kenyan population. Online polls often attract participants with particular political preferences, meaning their results may differ considerably from those of professionally conducted national opinion surveys.

Furthermore, the figures were preliminary and could have changed before the voting period ended. The poll alone cannot establish whether Sifuna would secure the opposition’s nomination or emerge as its eventual presidential candidate.

With the 2027 General Election approaching, the question of who will lead the opposition against Ruto remains open. The coming months are likely to bring further political consultations, alliances and debates as potential contenders position themselves for the contest.
