Putin Delivers 2 Unexpected Iran Shocks To Trump; Sends ‘Personal Message’ To Khamenei

According to a report by Times of India (TOI) on Friday October 9, 2026, The Russian president has told his Iranian counterpart, Massoud Pezeshkian, that Moscow is ready to help mediation efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East. The offer comes as fighting drags on.

The Strait of Hormuz remains at the center of the confrontation, and repeated diplomatic efforts have failed to produce a lasting settlement.

Putin and Pezeshkian spoke by phone, with Iranian state media saying the two leaders discussed the war and the rapidly expanding relationship between Moscow and Tehran.

Putin reportedly backed mediation efforts by other countries and told Pezeshkian that Iran could be assured Moscow was also ready to play a role and provide assistance.

But Russia would not be entering this crisis as a neutral outsider. Moscow and Tehran have dramatically deepened their relationship in recent years.

Putin and Pezeshkian signed a strategic partnership agreement in 2025, expanding economic and defense cooperation between two countries heavily targeted by Western sanctions.

Both sides have also exchanged military equipment and expertise, although their agreement stops short of requiring either country to militarily defend the other.

And Russia has already been pushing for a diplomatic role in the Iran conflict. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last month that Moscow was prepared to help stabilize the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Gulf, but finding a deal has proved extremely difficult.

The war began in February with US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Months of fighting and negotiations have followed, including a temporary ceasefire and multiple rounds of diplomacy. But Washington and Tehran remain divided over some of the biggest issues.

The US continues to demand major restrictions on Iran’s uranium enrichment program. Iran says its right to enrichment is non-negotiable. And then there is the Strait of Hormuz.
