The singer, who is returning to music releases after a period away, revealed that the track came together unexpectedly after she felt inspired to return to the studio.

In an exclusive interview with ClayNG, MrcyU explained that she connected with producer Ladi and went into the studio without a specific idea of what she wanted to create.

According to her, the experience took a spontaneous turn as they developed the beat from scratch, eventually giving birth to Switchin Up.

“Honestly, God inspired me to make this song. I hadn’t made new music in a while, and I started feeling the urge to do so. I connected with Ladi, went to the studio with nothing in mind. And wala, ‘Switchin Up’,” she said.

The singer explained that the record draws from her personal experiences, scripture, the feelings of people around her and the new energy she has been experiencing.

For MrcyU, the song’s message goes beyond simply doing things differently. It represents leaving the old behind and stepping into something new.

“What it means to me personally is overall doing things differently, forgetting the old, stepping into the new,” she said.

MrcyU also shared details of the creative process behind the single, revealing that the song took shape over two days.

She said she and Ladi created the beat from scratch on their first day in the studio, after which she recorded the hook.

The singer then went on a long walk by the water, where she came up with the remaining lyrics before returning to the studio the following day to complete the recording.

“I went in, we came up with the beat the same day from scratch. Ladi did his thing. He’s a super talented producer. I recorded the hook and then went on a long walk by the water and came up with the rest of the lyrics,” she explained.

“I went back to the studio the next day and recorded the rest. Ladi added some flairs and voilà.”

The process reflects the spontaneous beginnings of a song that MrcyU says was inspired by her faith and personal experiences rather than a predetermined creative plan.

Among the song’s lyrics, MrcyU identified one line as particularly personal: “No elevator, I took stairs.”

For the singer, the line captures the value of taking the longer route instead of seeking an easy shortcut.

“I think the ‘no elevator, I took stairs’ part. Because there’s always an easy shortcut route, but I took stairs, meaning a longer but more fulfilling journey,” she said.

The lyric also connects with her reflections on the period she spent away from releasing music, during which she said she learned to be flexible, remain open and give her best to whatever she does.

Quoting a biblical passage, she added: “Whatever your hands findeth to do, do it with all your heart.”

Her explanation offers a glimpse into the personal outlook informing the record, with persistence and fulfilment emerging as central themes.

MrcyU said the period away from releasing music taught her important lessons about flexibility, openness and trusting her personal journey.

While she considers herself the same artist listeners knew before the break, she also believes she has grown in confidence and developed a deeper understanding of the role faith plays in her life and music.

“The same but also different. I’m more confident knowing it’s not me. It’s God working through me. I’m more knowing that. Trusting my personal journey,” she said.

She added that spending more time studying scripture has influenced different aspects of her life, including her artistry.

“My growth is definitely reflected in the song. Spending more time in scripture, it pours out to every part of my life, including my artistry,” she explained.

Although Switchin Up arrives at a time when she is returning to releasing music, MrcyU clarified that she did not necessarily set out to make the song an introduction to a new chapter of her career.

Asked whether she felt the record was the right song to introduce this new phase, she responded: “I didn’t, it just is what it is.”

Her answer leaves the song to speak for itself, allowing listeners to interpret its message while offering a glimpse into the growth she says has taken place during her time away.

With Switchin Up, the singer hopes to leave listeners feeling inspired, empowered and refreshed.

Those emotions align with the themes of movement, faith, persistence and embracing change that she associates with the record.

For new listeners discovering her through the single, MrcyU believes the music itself should serve as the introduction.

She also remained tight-lipped about whether the single is part of a larger musical story, offering a brief response when asked what listeners could expect next.

Asked to describe this new chapter of her career in one sentence, the singer returned to the title of the record.

As MrcyU shares the single with listeners, the record offers an insight into the experiences, faith and personal growth shaping her music, while leaving the door open for what may come next.
