Don’t Allow That Pretender To Deceive You It Is Not Yet Our Turn, The North’s Turn Is In 2031–Akume

According to a report by Vanguard on Saturday, October 24, 2026, George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has said that any northerner seeking to contest the 2027 presidential election would be acting against the interests of the region.

He made the statement on Saturday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna State, where he called on residents to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Akume’s position comes amid growing political preparations for the 2027 general election, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) emerging as a prominent northern politician seeking to challenge Tinubu.

The anticipated contest has renewed discussions surrounding regional interests, power rotation and the distribution of political leadership between northern and southern Nigeria.

The SGF reminded northern residents that an agreement on power rotation between the North and South was reached in Kaduna State as part of efforts to preserve national unity.

He maintained that the understanding remained essential to sustaining political stability and preventing individual ambitions from disrupting the relationship between the two regions.

According to a statement released on Saturday by his spokesman, Yomi Odunuga, Akume made the remarks during a pre-campaign meeting attended by a large gathering of Benue State indigenes residing in Kaduna.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the federal government official to address members of the community and encourage them to support the ruling party ahead of the forthcoming election.

Akume urged the North to honour the existing power-sharing arrangement, insisting that the region should wait until 2031 before seeking the presidency.

He argued that Tinubu should be allowed to continue in office beyond 2027, urging northern voters to reject alternative candidates seeking to unseat the incumbent president in the next electoral cycle.

He also cautioned northerners against being misled by politicians whose presidential ambitions, according to him, could threaten the agreement between the two regions.

Akume maintained that supporting Tinubu would demonstrate respect for the power rotation understanding and called on residents to place national unity above personal political ambitions.

Addressing the gathering, Akume said: “Don’t allow that pretender to deceive you. It is not yet our turn. The North’s turn is in 2031. Prepare to vote for Tinubu. Do not allow anyone to destroy the country because of a vaunting personal ambition.”
