Kindiki assures residents of completion of Mau Mau roads

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki during an inspection tour of the kumbi–Karinga–Kinyona–Mairi road in Kigumo, Murang’a, on October 9, 2026/ ALICE WAITHERA Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reiterated the government’s commitment to completing the Sh9 billion Mau Mau roads project in Murang’a County, including the stalled Ikumbi–Karinga–Kinyona–Mairi section in Kigumo Constituency.

Speaking during a public engagement in Kinyona, Kigumo, Kindiki said funds had been secured and contractors whose projects stalled due to delayed payments had been paid, allowing construction to resume.

ā€œWe have the money required to complete this project. I assure you that, in the near future, this road will be completed and connected to the adjoining sections,ā€ he said.

The 225-kilometre project is part of a 540-kilometre road network launched during the administration of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to improve connectivity in Central Kenya, including areas linked to the struggle for independence.

The project starts in Kiambu and traverses Murang’a and Nyandarua counties before ending in Nyeri.

President William Ruto has previously emphasised that his administration would complete the project as part of efforts to finish stalled infrastructure projects.

The government has also prioritised tarmacking an additional 1,285 kilometres of roads in Murang’a for Sh56 billion, subject to the availability of funds.

Kindiki said contractors had been instructed to support local institutions through corporate social responsibility programmes.

He urged elected leaders to work with road authorities and contractors to identify schools and other facilities that could benefit.

He cited the Sh293 million Kinyona–Karinga Irrigation Project, which is expected to serve 1,500 households and provide water for 750 acres of farmland.

The government is exploring an additional Sh300 million to extend water supply to Gacharage, Mununga and Kamukabi, which are too elevated to be adequately served by the current project.

Kindiki urged residents to cooperate with security officers and disaster management teams as the rainy season approaches, saying heavy rainfall had previously caused mudslides that damaged homes and property.

ā€œWe want to prevent loss of life, minimise damage and protect residents from landslides and mudslides,ā€ he said.

He said the government would continue addressing challenges facing farmers, including improving returns from tea and expanding dairy infrastructure. He noted that the county had received 12 milk coolers from the administration.

The Deputy President urged leaders to focus on development rather than divisive politics, saying residents expected progress in roads, water, electricity and livelihoods.

He also warned against political violence ahead of the 2027 General Election, urging leaders not to mobilise young people against those with different political views.

ā€œWe cannot allow leaders to mobilise young people to attack one another simply because they hold different political opinions. That is unacceptable because it takes us backwards,ā€ he said.
