Kenyans React as Kalonzo Names Gachagua, Matiang’i and Sifuna in Fresh Message to Ruto Ahead of 2027

Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has raised the prospect of a united opposition as political leaders continue positioning themselves ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

Kalonzo was quoted saying that with a team comprising former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa, former Attorney General Justin Muturi, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and himself, President William Ruto would face a strong political challenge.

The remarks highlight the ongoing discussions about cooperation among opposition figures as they consider how to approach the next presidential election.

Each of the leaders named has a different political background. Gachagua leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), while Matiang’i has been linked to efforts to build an alternative political platform ahead of 2027. Wamalwa leads the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), and Muturi has also been involved in opposition politics.

Sifuna, meanwhile, has been associated with the emerging political movement around The Equitable Party (TEP), amid disagreements within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Kalonzo has previously called for opposition leaders to work together, arguing that cooperation will be important in challenging the ruling coalition at the ballot.
