Kennedy Agyapong Supporters Launch ‘Ghana Needs P.H.D.’ Campaign for Independent Presidential Bid
ACCRA, Ghana — December 12, 2023 — Supporters of Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the defeated New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant, have called on him to contest the 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate.
The group launched the “Ghana Needs P.H.D. 2024” campaign to rally public support for Mr Agyapong following his defeat in the NPP presidential primaries held on November 4, 2023.
According to a report by The Vaultz News published on December 12, 2023, the supporters made their appeal during a press conference addressed by the group’s chairperson, Kwabena Yankey. The group expressed confidence in Mr Agyapong’s leadership and pointed to his investments in job creation and infrastructure as reasons for supporting his presidential ambition.
Mr Agyapong finished second in the NPP primaries, polling 71,996 votes, representing 37.41 per cent of valid votes cast. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the contest with 118,210 votes, securing the party’s presidential nomination for the 2024 general election, according to the Ghana News Agency.
The campaign reflected efforts by some of Mr Agyapong’s supporters to persuade him to pursue the presidency outside the NPP after the internal election.
However, the launch of the campaign did not itself establish that Mr Agyapong had agreed to become an independent candidate. His supporters’ appeal and his own decision remained separate matters.
The development highlighted divisions in opinion among some NPP supporters following the primaries and raised questions about whether the defeated aspirant would maintain his commitment to the party’s electoral efforts.
