Cowboys’ DaRon Bland Reflects on Missed Opportunities in Loss to Buccaneers
The Dallas Cowboys’ defensive struggles continued in their Week 5 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and cornerback DaRon Bland was among the players left frustrated by missed opportunities.
While the Cowboys had chances to make key plays and get back into the game, they failed to capitalize, including Bland’s dropped interception that could have given Dallas an opportunity to tie the score.
With additional time to regroup before their next matchup, the Cowboys’ defense must find a way to correct its mistakes.
Bland had an opportunity to make a game-changing play when Tampa Bay rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels threw a pass toward wide receiver Emeka Egbuka. Bland jumped in front of the pass but couldn’t secure the interception.
For a cornerback who set an NFL record with five interception-return touchdowns in 2023, it was a missed opportunity he knows he needs to convert.
“I saw the ball, and I got to execute, finish the play,” Bland said after the game.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer also acknowledged that Bland is expected to make those plays, given his track record.
“We expect him to make those plays,” Schottenheimer said. “He expects himself to make those plays. He’s made those plays a bunch around here and probably surprised because I have seen him make those plays so much.”
According to Next Gen Stats, Bland was targeted five times across 31 coverage snaps, allowing three receptions for 91 yards. His performance reflected a difficult night for a Dallas secondary that struggled to contain Tampa Bay’s passing attack.
Bland also lost his footing on a third-and-21 play, allowing Egbuka to pick up a first down. Combined with missed tackles and Bucky Irving’s 72-yard run to open the second half, the Cowboys’ defensive mistakes repeatedly helped Tampa Bay sustain drives.
Bland did not shy away from the disappointment of losing to a team that entered the game without a win.
“It’s definitely frustrating,” Bland said. “Had an 0-4 team, gave them a win today.”
He also acknowledged that the secondary has room to improve.
“The DB room, not our best. Still got a lot to grow, more room to get better at.”
Despite the frustration, Bland expressed confidence in the team’s ability to handle adversity and learn from its mistakes. He also pointed to defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s willingness to review the film and identify areas for improvement.
“We handle it pretty good,” Bland said. “We don’t have a lot of guys getting down on themselves. Everybody’s trying to bring each other together and trying to keep going, have that next play mentality.”
Parker’s background coaching defensive backs could help Bland and his teammates improve, although Bland recognized the added responsibilities that come with being a defensive coordinator.
The Cowboys have extra time to evaluate their performance after playing three games in 11 days. That break gives Bland and the defense an opportunity to study the film, correct their mistakes and prepare for the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 18.
“Put in the extra work because you have the extra couple days, and then just looking back and seeing what you’ve got to work on. It’s first half of the season still,” Bland said.
Dallas has struggled to consistently stop opposing offenses, and missed opportunities have made those problems more costly. If the Cowboys want to rebound from their 2-3 start, they will need to turn those lessons into better execution.
Bland’s dropped interception was one moment in a disappointing team performance, but the Cowboys’ response during the extended break could help determine whether their defense improves in the weeks ahead.
