A small bronze ring recovered from beneath the waters off Egypt’s Mediterranean coast is offering a rare glimpse of one of the ancient world’s most famous monuments: the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

The ring, engraved with an image of the legendary lighthouse, was discovered during underwater archaeological excavations on the submerged royal island of Antirhodos, once part of the royal quarter of Alexandria’s ancient Great Harbor.The discovery was announced on October 7 by the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM), whose team is conducting excavations in cooperation with Egyptian antiquities authorities.
