5 hospitalized, police officer injured after crash on I-85 in north Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A 22-year-old was arrested after police said he hit a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police car and injured an officer while driving along I-85, according to reports.
Nicholas Stedeford-Aaron was arrested Saturday, Oct. 10, on reckless driving charges, including driving while impaired, after he allegedly crashed into an police officer’s car on Interstate 85. Full list of charges below.
The crash happened while officers were responding to a separate crash on northbound I-85, between W.T. Harris Boulevard and University City Boulevard.
Police said Stedeford-Aaron ran into the back of an occupied police car around 1:44 a.m. while driving on the interstate.
Medics took Stedeford-Aaron and the officer to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The officer, who reportedly had serious injuries, was released from the hospital the same day.
Officers said they evaluated Stedeford-Aaron and found that he was impaired when the crash happened. He was arrested after being released from the hospital and taken into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Stedeford-Aaron is charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving to endanger and failure to move over for an emergency vehicle resulting in injury.
Police said the investigation was ongoing, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol was investigating the the original accident.
Medics initially said that five people total were hospitalized because of the crash but police have not confirmed these details.
Northbound I-85 was opened back up shortly after the crash.
