Where Did Obi Get Dollars To Save Federation Account Paid Naira Never Dollars To States — Oshiomhole
Senator Adams Oshiomhole has dismantled Peter Obi’s famous savings claim, arguing that no state government ever received dollars, so the former Anambra governor could not have saved foreign currency as he boasts.
Speaking on Naija Unfiltered on SYMFONI, Oshiomhole said both men sat on the National Economic Council where governors asked for their allocations in dollars but the federal government paid in naira. He asked where Obi sourced dollars to save.
He turned the logic on himself, noting he secured 225 million dollars in World Bank budget support but left 78 million undrawn, which his successor inherited. He said by Obi’s logic, he too saved 78 million dollars.
In Oshiomhole’s words: “We were both members of the National Economic Council, the council of governors chaired by the vice president. We all said our allocation should be given to us in dollars, but they insisted that the recognized currency in Nigeria is naira, so all the allocations we receive are in naira. So I asked, where did Obi get dollars to save? I got approval of the World Bank for 225 million budget support over three years. By the time I left, about78 million had not been drawn. So if I want to talk like Obi, I will say I saved $78 million, which my successor inherited and spent.”
