Manchester United Superstar Officially Ruled Out of Squad With Infection

According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Friday October 9, 2026, Manchester United striker Lea Schuller has suffered a fresh fitness setback after being ruled out of Germany’s international friendly against Australia because of an infection, according to an official announcement.

The German Football Association confirmed on Friday that the 28-year-old forward would miss the fixture against Australia in Karlsruhe, dealing a blow to national team coach Christian Wuck’s selection plans.

Schuller joined Manchester United from Bayern Munich in January 2026 after establishing herself as one of Germany’s most productive forwards. Her absence also raises questions about whether she will recover before Germany’s next international commitment.

During her spell at Bayern, Schuller scored 103 goals in 181 appearances across competitions, demonstrating her consistent goalscoring ability and importance to the German club before making her move to England.

The striker previously finished as the Bundesliga’s leading goalscorer during the 2021-22 campaign and received Germany’s Footballer of the Year award in 2022, highlighting her achievements in domestic football.

At international level, Schuller has scored 56 goals in 87 appearances for Germany, becoming one of the country’s most experienced attacking players and an important contributor to their recent tournament campaigns.

She helped Germany win bronze at the 2024 Olympic Games before contributing to their run to the semi-finals of the 2025 European Championship, further underlining her international experience.

Germany are scheduled to face Japan on Tuesday, but the national federation has not confirmed whether Schuller will recover sufficiently to participate in that encounter.

Her absence comes as Manchester United also deal with several fitness concerns ahead of their upcoming Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick’s squad has been affected by injuries, including Patrick Dorgu’s hamstring problem, which is expected to keep him unavailable for several weeks following his international duty.

Benjamin Sesko remains sidelined with a recurring shin issue, while Noussair Mazraoui is also struggling with a knock. Meanwhile, Carlos Baleba has reportedly been making progress in his recovery.

There has been some encouragement for United, with Amad Diallo, Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo returning to partial training as they work towards regaining full fitness.

United will be hoping to improve their league form after collecting five points from their opening five matches. Their previous fixture ended in a 1-1 draw against Fulham, rescued by Matheus Cunha’s late deflected equaliser.

Tottenham have also endured a difficult start, sitting bottom of the Premier League with two points. Both teams therefore face pressure to deliver a positive result in Saturday’s encounter.

Although Schuller’s infection concerns Germany rather than Carrick’s immediate preparations, her situation adds another fitness development involving a Manchester United player during a demanding period.
