Trouble Looms As CPA Petitions Chief Justice To Remove Ofori-Atta Case From Current Court
The Committee for Public Accountability (CPA) has called on Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to reassign the criminal case involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and six other accused persons to a different court.
The case is before the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court. The CPA said its request follows public concerns about the proceedings and questions surrounding the perceived impartiality of the case.
In its petition, the organisation referred to allegations circulating on social media about possible conflicts of interest. It stressed, however, that those allegations remain unproven.
CPA Executive Secretary Collins Owusu Amankwa, who signed the petition, said the request should not be interpreted as an attack on the presiding judge or the court. He explained that the organisation’s primary objective was to protect public confidence in the judicial process.
The CPA believes transferring the case could help ensure that the principle of justice being both done and seen to be done is upheld.
The organisation said reassignment could also help ease public concerns and strengthen trust in Ghana’s justice system.
Ofori-Atta and the six other accused persons are facing multiple corruption-related charges. Among the other defendants are former Ghana Revenue Authority officials and executives of Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd.
The CPA has appealed to the Chief Justice to consider the petition as part of efforts to maintain confidence in the judiciary. According to the information provided, the Chief Justice has not yet issued an official response to the request.
