“They Said They Will Give Us GHC 7 For The Next Three Years” – General Secretary Of GNAT
Thomas Tanko Musah, General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has revealed that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission offered teachers only GHC 7 for the next three years.
Mr. Musah explained that this was the only proposal the Commission presented during their discussions. He expressed dissatisfaction with the offer, describing it as a sign of a lack of seriousness in addressing the concerns of teachers.
He added that the proposal has contributed to the ongoing strike by pre-tertiary teachers, who believe the offer falls short of their expectations.
The strike is expected to persist unless the Commission presents an improved proposal that addresses the concerns of the teachers. Without a satisfactory agreement, there is little incentive for the striking educators to resume their duties.
The continued industrial action is also affecting students in public basic and senior high schools, who are losing valuable teaching time. As the strike drags on, schools may struggle to complete their academic calendars and cover the required syllabuses.
Parents and guardians are equally facing uncertainty about their children’s education, particularly those who cannot afford to enrol them in private schools as an alternative.
The disagreement also highlights a growing lack of trust between teacher unions and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. If the offer was presented as described by Mr. Musah, the Commission needs to explain its position and propose terms that teachers can seriously consider.
Both parties must return to the negotiating table with realistic and clearly defined proposals. The Commission should explain the basis of its offer, while the union should provide its own figures and supporting arguments. The government must also ensure that negotiations progress swiftly towards a resolution.
Until both parties reach an acceptable agreement, the strike will continue to disrupt teachers’ work, students’ education and the wider educational system.
