My Mom Threw Me Into The Choir I Started Singing From Primary And Through Secondary School” — Uzor Arukwe
Nigerian actor Uzor Arukwe has revealed that his journey in the arts began before his teenage years, starting from the choir his mother threw him into at eleven.
Speaking on the podcast, Arukwe said he sang in primary and secondary school, took up dancing, and then discovered drama, never stopping since. He said watching legends on shows like Checkmate, Cockcrow at Dawn, Fortunes and Ripples showed him that people earned salaries from the craft.
He said his ambition was never a hobby but mastery. He said he wanted to be so good that his talent was undeniable.
In Arukwe’s words: “It’s been one hell of a ride. I’ve been doing this since even before I became a teenager. From 11, 12, that’s when I fell in love with performing arts. My mom threw me into the choir, I started singing, primary school, secondary school, started dancing as well, and then I fell in love with drama. Since then I never really stopped. When I realized that people made a living from it, I just wanted to be better. At the time, shows like Checkmate, Cockcrow at Dawn, Fortunes, Ripples, all that stuff, I watched all of them. I felt these guys get a salary, they make money from this craft, so if I’m so good that it’s undeniable, I can make money from it. For me it was more of doing it right than just doing it.”
