My Father is An Engineer, My Mom is a Teacher, and I Was An Only Child For 13 Years-Uzor Arukwe

Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has opened up about his family background, revealing that he grew up as an only child for 13 years in a household shaped by his parents’ professional careers in engineering and teaching.

Arukwe shared this detail during an interview on the Tea with Tay podcast on Friday, October 9, 2026, while reflecting on his upbringing and the family environment that influenced his early years and shaped his parents’ expectations for his future.

The actor explained that his father was an engineer, while his mother worked as a teacher. Growing up in a family with a strong academic orientation, Arukwe said his parents placed considerable importance on education and expected him to pursue a conventional career rather than venture into the entertainment industry.

ā€œMy father is an engineer, my mom is a teacher, and I was an only child for 13 years,ā€ Arukwe said.

He explained that his parents’ professional backgrounds influenced their perception of his ambitions, particularly his father’s initial opposition to the idea of him becoming an artist. Although Arukwe had developed a passion for performing arts from childhood, his family initially viewed his creative interests as hobbies he would eventually outgrow.

The actor recalled that his interest in entertainment began at a young age when his mother enrolled him in the church choir. He subsequently developed an interest in dancing and drama, participating in various performance activities throughout his primary and secondary school years.

Despite his growing passion for the arts, Arukwe pursued a university education in Economics, largely in response to his parents’ expectations. However, his academic path did not diminish his determination to build a career in acting.

His account offers a glimpse into the family circumstances surrounding his upbringing and the contrasting expectations between his parents’ preferred career path for him and his own creative ambitions, which eventually led him into Nollywood.
