George Pickens Emerges as Cowboys’ Biggest Bright Spot in Loss to Buccaneers
The Dallas Cowboys suffered a disappointing 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night, but George Pickens provided a much-needed bright spot in an otherwise frustrating performance.
Dallas fell to 2-3 after struggling on both sides of the ball, but Pickens delivered one of his best performances of the season. With CeeDee Lamb limited by a quad injury, Pickens stepped up as Dak Prescott’s primary target and gave the Cowboys a chance to stay competitive.
Pickens finished with nine receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown, setting season highs in both catches and receiving yards. He also earned an 85.2 grade from Pro Football Focus, the highest mark among Cowboys starters.
His performance was particularly important after he recorded just two catches against the Houston Texans in Week 4. Tampa Bay’s defensive approach gave Pickens more opportunities to make an impact, and he took full advantage.
“I feel like on most of my air routes, the safety would help because it’s an in-breaking route,” Pickens said, “but besides that, no double-teams.”
Quarterback Dak Prescott appreciated having a receiver capable of creating opportunities across the field.
“We’re fortunate to have a guy like GP to be able to move around if that’s what we’re trying to get done,” Prescott said.
Unfortunately for Dallas, Pickens’ production wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s defensive struggles and costly turnovers. Prescott threw two interceptions, while the Buccaneers piled up 241 rushing yards to control much of the game.
Pickens’ performance became even more important as Lamb struggled to get involved in the passing game.
After recording 17 receptions for 189 yards against Houston, Lamb managed just two catches for nine yards against Tampa Bay before leaving in the fourth quarter with a quadriceps injury.
Pickens, who has developed a strong connection with Lamb, understood the importance of taking on additional responsibility.
“Most definitely,” he responded when asked if he tries to rise to the challenge when Lamb is not available. “When CeeDee went out, I just definitely was trying to do the best I could to keep us in the game.”
Pickens has demonstrated that ability before. During the 2025 season, Lamb missed time with a high ankle sprain, and Pickens stepped up by averaging 106.7 receiving yards per game over a four-game stretch. He finished that season with career highs of 93 receptions, 1,429 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection.
Following Thursday’s loss, Pickens also expressed optimism about Lamb’s recovery.
“I feel like he’ll be good,” Pickens said of his teammate and friend. “I feel like he’ll bounce back next week.”
While Pickens gave Dallas a reason for optimism, the Cowboys need more consistent performances across the roster to turn their season around.
The defense struggled to contain Tampa Bay’s rushing attack, and turnovers repeatedly undermined the offense’s chances of mounting a comeback. Pickens’ individual success ultimately couldn’t make up for those shortcomings.
The Cowboys now have additional time to regroup before facing the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 18. With Dallas sitting at 2-3, the upcoming matchup presents an important opportunity to respond.
Pickens understands that the team must focus on building momentum rather than dwelling on the loss.
“Stack on the wins,” Pickens said. “That’s kind of how you can start a moving train. You kind of want to keep your head in it because anything can happen. So just keep your head down, just honor (the process) and keep going.”
For Dallas, Pickens’ performance was a positive takeaway from a disappointing night. The challenge now is getting the rest of the team to match that level of production.
