Female SAPS Officer Filmed Looking Down After Being Confronted Over Alleged R4,000 Bribe

A video circulating on social media has captured a tense confrontation between a female South African Police Service (SAPS) officer and a member of the public who accused her and her colleague of accepting a R4,000 bribe. The footage, posted on X, shows the uniformed officer sitting inside a marked SAPS vehicle and looking down as the person confronting her demands answers. The individual who shared the clip labelled the officers “Criminal Police” and alleged that they had taken the money from someone in exchange for an unspecified favour.

According to reports, the confrontation stemmed from an incident involving a 36-year-old domestic worker who claimed she was bundled into a police van on Sunny Road in Glenhazel while on her way to work. The woman alleged the officers demanded money, accessed R4,000 through her Mukuru account at a Shoprite, and then dropped her off in the Johannesburg CBD. An 18-year-old matriculant who witnessed the woman in tears decided to track down the officers and confront them, asking: “You stole money from an innocent lady. She was crying. She has no money for the month. Are you monsters?”.

The video, however, does not show the events leading up to the confrontation, leaving key details unclear. The clip begins with the female officer already looking down, and the post does not indicate where or when the footage was recorded. During the exchange, the officers reportedly questioned whether the student could identify them as the culprits, with one asking “Which one?” while the other responded, “Are you sure it’s us?”. Neither officer denied taking the money outright, and their responses drew sharp scrutiny from social media users who argued the reactions suggested guilt.

The viral clip has sparked heated debate across South African social media, with users expressing mixed reactions. Some expressed frustration with the state of policing in the country and called for the alleged bribery to be investigated, while others cautioned against judging the officers based solely on a brief visual and a person’s body language. Commenters pointed to the officers’ responses as telling, with one user writing: “‘Which one?’ Makes you guilty”. Others demanded that the domestic worker be given the opportunity to identify the officers involved.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi has urged the woman to open a formal case, stating that doing so would allow the necessary investigative processes to unfold. At this stage, it remains unclear whether the alleged R4,000 bribe has been formally reported or whether the officers involved have been questioned. The incident has once again fuelled discussions about police accountability and corruption within the SAPS, with the public awaiting further information to determine what actually happened.
