Atiku Reacts As FG Announces That Nigerians Will Buy Fuel At Cheaper Rates In The Next 30 Days
Former Nigerian Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised the Federal Government’s plan to reduce petrol prices for Nigerians over the next 30 days, questioning the sustainability of the temporary relief.
The reaction was made public on Thursday, October 8, 2026, through a post shared on the official X account of Abdul Rasheeth, Atiku Abubakar’s Special Adviser on Media.
According to a report by Channels Television, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, announced that the Federal Government would provide a discount on petrol sold through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for the next 30 days.
The initiative is expected to offer motorists and other fuel consumers some relief from the high cost of petrol. However, Atiku’s camp has raised concerns about what would happen when the temporary arrangement expires.
In his reaction, the former vice president questioned whether the government’s intervention would make any meaningful difference to the country’s economic difficulties in the long run. He argued that a one-month reduction in fuel prices would not address the broader challenges facing ordinary Nigerians.
Abdul Rasheeth, speaking on behalf of Atiku, maintained that the expected relief could be short-lived, with citizens likely to face the same economic pressures once the 30-day period ends.
He also highlighted the connection between fuel prices, transportation expenses and the increasing cost of food, stressing that Nigerians continue to struggle with rising living costs.
In the statement shared on X, Rasheeth wrote:
“What happens on Day 31? Nigerians wake up to the same brutal prices, the same punishing transport fares and the same rising cost of food. The government cannot manufacture relief for one month and expect Nigerians to applaud while the hardship remains”.
