US Embassy Issues Fresh Warning to Americans in Saudi Arabia Over Houthi Threats

The United States Embassy in Saudi Arabia has warned American citizens to remain highly vigilant following public threats by Yemen’s Houthi movement against airports and airspace across the Kingdom.

In a security alert issued on Wednesday, October 7, the US Mission said the security situation could deteriorate further, potentially affecting travellers through flight cancellations, airspace closures and other disruptions.

The warning followed Houthi claims that missiles and drones had been launched toward targets in Saudi Arabia, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Abha airport and military facilities.

Saudi authorities reported that a ballistic missile was intercepted north of Riyadh. However, the Houthi claims regarding attacks on the airports had not been independently verified at the time of the warning.

The US Embassy advised Americans to check their flight departure status directly with airlines and airports, warning that the escalating military conflict could quickly affect commercial air travel across the Kingdom.

The Mission also imposed restrictions on US government personnel because of the security risks. Employees are prohibited from travelling within 20 miles of the Yemen border without appropriate authorisation.

Special authorisation is also required for US government personnel travelling to Jizan, Asir and Najran provinces, as well as Qatif, Yanbu and Taif, reflecting concerns over potential security incidents.

American citizens were advised against travelling near the Yemen border and urged to follow instructions issued by Saudi authorities, particularly alerts released by the country’s Civil Defence during security incidents.

The embassy clarified that the warning did not mean Saudi Arabia’s entire airspace had been closed or all flights cancelled. Instead, Americans were urged to remain vigilant, monitor official alerts and confirm flight information before travelling.
